Metal Finishing Sourcing Asia: Buyer Finish Checks

October 6, 2026
Metal Fabrication
Powder-coated or finished metal parts ready for packing

Metal finishing sourcing Asia is where many OEM programs lose control. The fab or CNC plant quotes a finished part; the powder line, galvanizer, or anodizer sits across town — or across a province — and the buyer never names them. Corrosion, color, and adhesion failures then become finger-pointing between three companies.

This guide is for buyers who source sheet metal, CNC, or fab with outsourced powder, zinc / galv, anodize, paint, or passivation. It is not a chemistry textbook. It is what to demand and verify when finish leaves the primary plant. Qualify the fab with how to qualify Asia suppliers; for lot-level checks see factory quality inspection Asia; audit the route with factory audit practice — and treat the finisher as a second supplier.

1. Map the finish route on the RFQ

Do not accept “surface treatment included” without a route sheet.

  • Process callout (powder, HDG, electro-zinc, anodize type, paint system) and thickness / class

  • In-house vs named outside vendor — plant name and address

  • Bare-metal handoff state (degrease, blast, weld grind standard)

  • Who owns rework when finish fails after fab was correct

If the fab will not name the coater, you are buying opacity. Price that risk or walk. Vietnam and China both use capable finish partners and weak ones; the gap is visibility, not a country slogan.

2. Powder coating: process checks

When powder is the callout:

  • Pretreat method (iron phosphate, zinc phosphate, etc.) — written, not “standard”

  • Film thickness ranges and measurement points (edges, weld zones, deep pockets)

  • Cure verification (time/temp records or simple checks your PO allows)

  • Color / gloss acceptance and batch control for multi-lot programs

  • Masking and grounding for coated-then-machined or EMI surfaces

Visit the powder line when it is the constraint. A clean fab with a dirty hang line will still ship field failures. Ask for recent thickness reports on parts like yours, not only a color chip.

3. Galvanizing and zinc: what buyers miss

Hot-dip and electro-zinc behave differently; do not mix them on the PO.

  • Spec / class / thickness and which surfaces are critical

  • Distortion and drain-hole design for HDG — fab must design for the kettle

  • Thread and fit recovery after zinc (tap, chase, or buy oversized)

  • White rust prevention and packing for sea freight

  • Who inspects after galv: fab, galvanizer, or third party

HDG is not a paint. Thin sheet and weldments can warp; that is a design and process issue, not only a coating complaint. Put drain and vent features on the drawing early.

4. Anodize and other aluminium finishes

For aluminium CNC and fab:

  • Alloy suitability for the anodize type requested

  • Type / class / color and sealing where required

  • Rack marks and cosmetic zones defined on the drawing

  • Machining before vs after anodize — which dimensions are finish-critical

  • Outsourced anodizer name and visit rights

Cosmetic anodize on a showpiece does not prove lot control. Confirm racking capacity and color match process for repeats.

5. Contracts, samples, and lot inspection

Lock finish into commercial and QC language:

  • Named finisher on the PO or approved vendor list

  • Golden sample or first-article with thickness / adhesion evidence

  • Incoming / outgoing inspection after finish (see factory quality inspection practice) — not only bare metal

  • Change control: finisher switch needs written buyer approval

Score the finish vendor with the same honesty as the fab. Dual-source fab with single-source anonymous plating is not dual-source for the customer.

6. When to visit and when to escalate

Visit the finisher when corrosion or cosmetic risk is high, when volume is large, or when the fab’s QC does not inspect after coating. Escalate when names change, when thickness drift repeats, or when packing after finish is improvised.

Ask the fab to show hang tags or travelers that follow parts to the coater and back. If lots leave without identity and return as “mixed OK,” you cannot run a claim. That handoff is as much a finish control as film thickness.

If coordinating fab plus finish across Asia sites is more than your SQE bench can hold, OEM & Component Sourcing is the Lekker path that keeps metal finishing on a named route — not a footnote on a fabrication quote.

Metal finishing sourcing in Asia is a buyer map: route on the RFQ, process checks for powder / galv / anodize, contracts and lot inspection after coat, visit when the finish is the constraint. Unnamed finish is unfinished sourcing.
